First Use and First Sharpening

Okay, I know it's not a legit drawing, but I used all of my colored pencils and three of the graphite pencils today to create my own color reference chart.

Colored pencil reference chart

I first drew the grid lightly with the help of a foot ruler. Then I labeled the cells in the same order that I'm storing the pencils in their trays, as I showed you in the previous post.

When I'd labeled 24 squares, I shaded in each of them with the appropriate color, starting with a heavy hand and getting lighter as I moved down.

Rather than sharpen the 2B I started the labeling with, I switched to my B and then my HB graphite pencils to do the same for each of the next two trays.

Everything was going along just fine until I got to Dark Chocolate Brown.

The "lead" was broken!

I don't have a hand sharpener yet, so I used our electric pencil sharpener. It worked okay, but I'll be getting a handheld soon.

With a handheld sharpener you can control the pressure on the pencil so you don't have to lose any more material than is necessary. I've also read that the wax centers of a colored pencil can gum up an electric sharpener. Don't wanna do that.

So, now it's on to a real drawing. Don't expect it real soon. I've got other real things to do each day too.

Oh...we thought Coyote Brown looked kinda greenish; that is, the paint on the outside of the pencil. Turns out the coloring looks a little greenish too. I was kinda hoping it wouldn't. After all, it is called Coyote Brown.
